About Fablab Winam

Fablab Winam is a community Makerspace in Kisumu, NYANZA, Kenya, Kenya. it provides open access to digital fabrication tools, electronics labs, and collaborative workspaces for students, educators, entrepreneurs, and independent makers. Members can work with 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC routers, and electronics prototyping equipment to turn ideas into functional prototypes. The space hosts regular STEM workshops, coding sprints, and design thinking sessions that attract talent from across NYANZA. Whether you are a first-time maker or a seasoned hardware engineer, Fablab Winam offers the tools, community, and mentorship needed to build, iterate, and innovate — making it one of the most valuable innovation resources in Kenya.

Description

Winam Fablab offers a hub for sharing ideas, tools and other resources by makers, Artisans (Jua Kali), professionals, educators, students, entrepreneurs, learning institutions, hobbyists, kids etc. It taps into gaps between classroom-learnt skills and market needs experiences to build products that address challenges and emphasizes on local manufacturing using emerging tech-based trends like IoT. Based in Western Kenya region in Kisumu where there are just a few industries, the Fablab Winam will be keen on using people-centred design approaches for socio-economic challenges and incubation
Currently Fablab Winam caries out the following programs
1. Fab Academy - International MOOC course on Digital Fabrication.
2. Fabricademy - International interdisciplinary program that focuses on sustainability and digital technologies applied to the textile field, and its broad range of applications, from fashion and costume design, to wearable technologies, to material science and bio-technology.
2. Fab Kids - a STEM/STEAM cause for kids from primary, JSS and to high school teaching hands-on skills aligned to CBC
3. Other short term courses on 3D Printing, Laser cutting. designing, CNC operation etc and project-based activities for all ages
4. Innopreneur Bootcamp - a monthly bootcamp for makers and innovators in the region
5. Fabrication, Prototyping,mentorship
6. Research, project development, Contracting & Consultation
